Ritual Renaissance – Engagement with our Ritual


ORIGIN: The Fraternity’s Ritual Renaissance and Revitalization program was conceived by 67th Grand Consul Dennis Santoli, CASE WESTERN 1967, to train our members to engage undergraduate chapters through their understanding and performance of our Ritual. Through engagement and mentoring, undergraduate members gain insight and appreciation for the meaning and symbolism of our Ritual and its statutes. The resulting gains in ritualistic understanding are expected to have a positive impact on behavior at the individual and chapter levels.

ROLES: The program establishes a Ritual Master role, whereby members who have displayed a mastery of Ritual knowledge provide guidance and support for the program. This group has three functions: establishing training methods and resources; performing a train-the-trainer role with those wishing to become certified as Ritual Peers; and providing ongoing resources for Peers with questions or who desire to become Ritual Masters — a roughly 18-month course of study. Any initiated member can become a Ritual Peer by taking a one-day course, scoring 80 percent or better on an online, open-book certification test and committing to serve in that role for a period of three years, during which time they will engage with an undergraduate chapter in their area.

STANDARDS: The Ritual Renaissance and Revitalization committee, with approval from the Executive Committee, creates educational standards for Ritual Masters and Peers, and ultimately for the Ritual certification of chapters. Masters train Peers, Peers assist chapters, and both Masters and Peers mentor chapters in the process of Ritual certification — testing their understanding of history, ideas and symbolism, as well as their performance of ritualistic ceremonies.

ENGAGEMENT: Grand Praetors assign Peers to chapters and assume responsibility for their performance in the province. Peers work with chapters to establish mutual goals for Ritual understanding and performance. They are expected to involve the chapter advisor and advisory board, Grand Praetor and the chapter’s Ritual committee in the certification process. Masters and Peers have no governance role, only that of mentoring and reporting outcomes to the General Fraternity.

CERTIFICATION: A person achieves Master status by scoring 90 percent or better on a 40-question essay test and providing proof of facilitation skills; after which, proof of ongoing engagement is all that is necessary to continue in this role. To become a certified Ritual Peer, a person must score 80 percent or better on his certification exam and agree to serve in his geographic area for at least three years without reimbursement. Peers are automatically renewed at the end of their three-year term if they have worked with an undergraduate chapter. Chapters are certified annually and must score 80 percent or better on a certification checklist, which is designed to measure undergraduates’ Ritual application (40%), performance (35%) and understanding of history, knowledge and symbolism (25%).

APPLICATION: It is our firm hope and belief that all parties acquire an appreciation for the Ritual in such a way that applying its teachings and principles in our daily lives becomes automatic. This program can provide an additional entry point for alumni wishing to find a role for continued Fraternity service.
